TEST RIG FOR THE SAFETY VALVE
FOR THE BOILER VAPOUR OUTPUT PIPE
I BUILT THIS TEST RIG USING AN AUTOMATIC SELF INFLATING BLOOD PRESSURE MONITOR, TO BLOW AIR TO CRACK THE VALVE OPEN.  THE MONITOR SHOWS THE PRESSURE IN MMHG,
HERE THE VALVE OPENS AT 40mm hg ( MERCURY )

NOTE : THE PUMP IN THE BLOOD PRESSURE MONITOR WILL PUMP TO INFLATE THE ARM BAND.
BY DISCONNECTING THE TUBE AND INSTALLING IT AT THE BASE OF THE CHECK VALVE, THE PRESSURE FROM THE PUMP BLOWS AIR THROUGH THE CHECK VALVE, CRACKING THE VALVE OPENED. THE AMOUNT OF PRESSURE NEEDED TO OPEN THE VALVE IS INDICATED ON THE MONITOR DISPLAY. THE PUMP WILL RUN FOR ABOUT 1 MINUTE THEN, THE UNIT WILL INDICATE A FAULT.  ( THE BAND IS MISSING )
THE UNIT IS THEN TURNED OFF AND ON AGAIN FOR AS MANY TESTS AS NEEDED.

THIS PRESSURE CAN BE ADJUSTED BY TIGHTENING THE NUT THAT HOLDS THE SPRING AT THE BASE OF THE SEAT.

WITH THE PRESENT SETUP, ( AS IT SITS ON THE HARDWARE STORE SHELF )
THE PRESSURE CAN BE ADJUSTED TO A SAFE 100 mm hg
CORESPONDING TO 2 PSI. ( APROX)

THE MAKING OF THE TEST RIG : 1-2-3

  1. I UNPLUGGED THE TUBE FROM THE ARM BAND
  2. I INSERTED IT AT THE BASE OF THE CHECK VALVE, IN THE DIRECTION OF THE NORMAL FLOW OF THE LIQUID THROUGH THE VLVE.
  3. I THEN TAPED IT TO COMPLEATELY SEAL OFF ANY POTENTIAL AIR LEAKS.

THIS TEST RIG IS VERY ACCURATE AND SIMPLE ENOUGH TO USE, AND RELATIVELY INEXPENSIVE AS COMPARED TO A LAB SETUP.

HERE I SHOW THE RISE IN PRESSURE BY PRESSING ON THE VALVE SEAT TO INCREASE ITS RESISTANCE TO 125 mm hg
THIS IS THE EQUIVALENT RESISTANCE OF 2.5 Psi  (2.42 Psi)

THIS IS THE RECOMMENDED MAXIMUM PRESSURE FOR SAFE
USE OF A STANDARD 55 GALLON DRUM

203ul.jpg

HERE, I INCREASE THE RESISTANCE TO 203 mm hg.

THIS IS THE EQUIVALENT RESISTANCE OF 4 Psi (3.93 Psi)

THIS IS A MAXIMUM SETTING OF THIS TYPE OF VALVE
WITH THE FACTORY INSTALLED SPRING.

NOTE : 1 Psi = 51.72 mmhg  ( 1mmhh = 0.01934 Psi )

  • FOR SAFETY PUROSES THIS PRESSURE SHOULD NEVER EXEED 2.5Psi AS IT IS AMPLE PRESSURE FOR FEEDING ANY KIND OF MASH AND IT WILL OPEN FREELY WITHOUT
    • AFFECTING THE SHAPE OF A REGULAR 55 GALLON DRUM.
