PIPE JOINTS FUSION TECHNIQUES AND CEMENTS

A GOOD WAY TO START A PROJECT IS TO GET THE BASIC INFORMATION RIGHT FROM THE SOURCE.

AFTER 100'S OF HOURS OF TESTING, BOILING , SCRAPING, DRILLING etc... ,
I GOT EXCELLENT RESULTS AS FAR AS RESISRANCE TO TEMPERATURES, RESISTANCE TO EtOH, ( AZEOTROPE AND PURE ) TO THE NORMAL ATMOSPHERE TEMPERATURES, FOR DISTILLATION AS WELL AS THE DISTILLATION OF PURE WATER.

PREVIOUS REPORTS ON THE NET FROM OTHER FELLOWS WHO TRIED PLASTICS LEAD ME TO BELIEVE THAT THE JOINTS WERE NOT DONE USING AN ISO 9000 TYPE TECHNIQUE WHICH IS MORE OF A VOODOO DANCE THAN CEMENTING A PIPE JOINT.
BUT IF YOU DON'T DO THE DANCE, THE JOINTS WILL NOT HOLD...WE ARE TALKING ''FUSION'', NOT GLUING.

I THOUGHT IT WAS TIME TO GRT A THIRD OPINION FROM SPECIALISTS WHO WROTE THE BOOK.

I FOUND THE PPFA SITE WHICH IS WITHOUT ANY DOUBT THE REFERENCE SOURCE FOR ALL TO DO WITH PLASTIC PIPES.
I POSTED THE QUESTION : CAN I USE ABS AND CPVC
TO MAKE A VACUUM OPERATED STILL,
IN THE TEMPERATURE RANGES OF 130 Deg F.

HERE IS THE REPLY FROM Mr David A Chasis of PPFP :

Gilles, Thank you for your inquiry to the PPFA concerning your application of piping for vacuum distillation.

For your application, ethyl alcohol at a slight vacuum and temperature of up to 140°F, ABS and CPVC should handle the application quite well. You may want to consider other thermoplastics that would also handle this application such as PVC (140°F is the max, temperature limitation), Polyethylene and Cross-linked Polyethylene (PEX) or Polyvinylidene Fluoride (PVDF). ABS, PVC and CPVC are cementable while the other plastics can be joined using heat fusion and, or mechanical-type joints (PEX in particular).

Please check the PPFA/TIPS website www.ppfahome.org/tips and click on the manufacturer’s products category to see members who offer these products. If you have further questions, please don’t hesitate to contact us again.

Sincerely, David A. Chasis

A VERY IMPORTANT PART OF USING ABS, IS TO CONSIDER THAT A JOINT IS NOT GLUED, BUT IT IS FUSED AND THERE IS A BIG DIFFERENCE :
THE SOCKET OR FEMALE PORTION IS SLIGHTLY TAPER
(TEST A DRY FIT AND NOTE THAT THE PIPE DOES NOT GO TO THE VERY END OF THE SOCKET. )
THIS IS TO ALLOW THE PIPE AND THE SOCKET TO FUSE (MELT) TOGETHER FOR AT LEAST 1/3 OF THE SOCKET'S DEPHT.
ALWAYS BE VERY GENEROUS WITH THE CEMENT AS IT MUST MELT
THE MATING SURFACES.

CONSTRUCTION OF 3
ABS, PVC, CPVC- CHARLES 803 STILLS

I WILL CONSTRUCT  CHARLES 803 STILLS OUT OF THESE MATERIALS, AND TEST THEM TO THE OPERATING LIMIT TEMPERATURE OF 140 Deg F AND RUN THEM FOR  100 HOURS CONTINUOUS.

THEN I WILL PUSH THEM TO 180 Deg F, FOR 100 OR SO HOURS AND SEE WHAT HAPPENS.

I WILL POST A FULL PROGRESS REPORT STARTING IN MAY 2006.

IF IT WORKS  WELL, A FULL SET OF PLANS AND CONSTRUCTION MANUAL WILL BE MADE AVAILABLE THROUGH Nanda Warren, AROUND JULY 2006.

FOR THOSE OF YOU WHO LIKE THINGS CLEAN AND PRECISE.

OUR FAVORITE VENDOR MAY BE INTERESTED IN MAKING AND SELLING THIS VERSION, OR THE COMPLETE KIT OF PARTS, WE WILL SEE WHAT HAPPENS THEN.

THOSE OF YOU WHO HAVE PURCHASSED THE PLANS FROM Robert or Nanda Warren, WILL BE PURCHASSING AN UPDATE FROM THE ORIGINAL PLANS FOR HALF THE PRICE.

FOR THOSE OF YOU WHO HAVE BUILT THE CHARLES 803, THERE WILL BE AMPLE INFORMATION AT THIS SITE FOR YOU TO FIGURE OUT WHAT TO DO, SINCE THE INTERNALS WILL REMAIN ROUGHLY THE SAME, WITH COOLING COILS, THERMOMETER PORT, TEMPERATURE CONTROLLED VALVE, DOUBLER, INPUT PIPING etc...
